What are all the bases I need to cover when repointing content from an old site or merged website with another?
I've merged several websites into one. They are all related to each other and makes sense to combine them into one rather than split all that traffic.
- I am assuming I need to use a Redirect plugin (in the event the URL has changed other than the domain)
- Update the .htaccess file with a wildcard 301 redirect from previous domain to new one.
- Update Google Analytics?
- Update Google Console?
- Anything else?
If you are moving the entire domain, you can get away with just a 301 redirect in the .htaccess file for the domains you are consolidating.
You can then dump the google analytics I suppose since there is no longer a website there. Not sure if it is possible to merge.
Leave Google Console in place so you have access to any errors.
In the past what I have done is pointed each indexed url to the correct url on the new domain name. Not sure if you are consolidating content.
